Everything must have a place where it starts. For me the idea of a blog began in traffic because, as anyone who’s sat in traffic will tell you, you can only yell at the eggheads gawking the accident across the divider so long. Eventually your mind starts wandering. And hence the title of this blog. Damn this traffic jam…
I do a lot of good thinking in the car…it can be about just about anything and everything. Sometimes politics and the state of our country and our world, sometimes about my work, and sometimes about random things that doesn’t even make much sense. And while talking to myself can be a relatively easy conversation, I thought it would be more fruitful with a larger audience.
I am a professional musician; serving in a number of capacities from church musician to music educator to performer to composer/arranger. My professional career has always been predicated upon the notion of being a jack-of-all-trades in the profession, and therefore hopefully contributing positively to more than one area at a time. I could tell you more, but you’ll learn more about me as you read the coming blog articles.
I think that one thing we’ve lost as a society, especially recently, is the ability to have a conversation. Not just a conversation between two people or groups that basically agree, but a candid conversation between those that have opinions that are opposed. Just look at any Facebook political post. If you read far enough, things can get really ugly, devolving into name calling, and other ugly slander, which basically accomplishes nothing. The truth is that there’s often validity in various facets of an issue, and ideas and, dare I say it, solutions to the greatest issues plaguing us, can come from exploring those facets. So I want this blog to be a vessel of good, respectful conversation, where ideas are freely exchanged, considered equally, and good discord ensues. I’d like to see points argued passionately, but respectfully. Anyone is welcome to comment, although I will have to approve those comments. Please know that that approval will simply be based upon the spirit of the comments…ensuring they be in the spirit of that which I have written above. I am not out to censure anyone who disagrees with me, rest assured…but expect a vigorous response.
My goal is to post approximately once a week on Fridays…more often during the summer and when my work allows me to have more free time, and less around holidays and other times where its just not possible.
So…with that. Let’s begin.
